Power Stone (2019) is a 297 x 420mm graphite, ink, acrylic ink and marker drawing in a frame. It is part of the Trans Neolithic Future series (2019-2021). These playful and visually enticing works can be seen as a personal interpretation of the various theories put forwards by archaeologists who propose that early European/Mediterranean societies were ruled by matriarchal systems.
In the Power Stone, we see symbols that look like logo's of big corporations like Shell and Bayer-Monsanto. They are positioned alongside of outlines of hands that seem to emote a stance towards these entities. We also see the runic symbol of Dagaz which implies the break of a new dawn or era. Is this a stone found in an ancient past, or a far-future where the folx alive need to carve in stone to communicate once more.
In stark contrast to the grey hues of the stones in these works, Griepink chose bright green lichen as the herald of nature's wild wisdom. A viridescent film sprawling over the voluptuous and monumental stone configurations. We see lichens, a multi-species composed of a fungus living in a symbiotic relationship with an alga or cyanobacterium (or both in some instances). Please see the full series for more information.
