Ghosts of Futures Past

𖦹 Exhibition Ghosts of Futures Past at Garage Rotterdam opens Friday 29th of November!

I am super excited to announce my upcoming group show taking place at Garage Rotterdam, curated by Nadine van den Bosch.

In the context of this exhibition, I am showing a fresh new commissioned installation inspired by the myth of the murky mermaid Melusine and my teenage years exploring identity, sexuality and trauma in the alchemic sanctuary of the swamp.

The result is a large sculptural installation comprised of metal, brick, ceramic, and glassware elements containing water and living matters, made and collected this year between Artists in Residence in Everglades, Make Eindhoven, and my studio in Amsterdam. Inside the installation several costumes are presented, and the walls hold some new 2D works. Also, premiering in the Netherlands is the music video work Murky Murky, Little Bitch Witch (2023) which I made at SÍM Residency, Reykjavík in the summer of last year.I'm very excited to show again in the Netherlands and to see you there. It's been a while!

Artists: Jaasir Linger, MingJou Chen, Oscar Santillán, Saar Scheerlings, Sondi and Venus Jasper.

SAVE THE DATE: Opening on Friday 29th, 7 PM (Free entry!)

INFO:

"How does spirituality shape our search for meaning and connection in a rapidly changing world? The exhibition Ghosts of Futures Past delves into the connection between transformation and spirituality.

The title refers to a book by Molly McGarry, in which she explores how spiritualism in America was a way for people to cope with big changes in society. Activities like séances (calling spirits) were not only used to get closer to the afterlife, but also to deal with loss, trauma and fast adjustments.

Through the lens of philosopher Jacques Derrida’s concept of ‘hauntology’, Ghosts of Futures Past also explores how the past continues to linger in the present. The past behaves like a ghost that keeps reminding us of what once was and what could have been.

The artworks in Ghosts of Futures Past show a constant back-and-forth between the past, present and future. All artists use spirituality to respond to the changes of our era – such as the rise of artificial intelligence, our relationship with nature and non-human entities, our perception of the passing of time, and questions about gender and identity."

Show runs until February 9, 2015.

Thank you Mondrian Fund, Amarte.

XOXO

Venus
